Illegal Downloading – In a battle that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere truly worthwhile, Radiohead, Keane and Blur have come out in strong support of the ‘three strikes’ rule against illegal downloading in the UK. The rule will see users bandwidth sanctioned after three warnings if they continue to download music illegally. A message on the Feature Artists Coalition website said, “Our meeting voted overwhelmingly to support a three-strike sanction on those who persistently download illegal files, sanctions to consist of a warning letter, a stronger warning letter and a final sanction of the restriction of the infringer’s bandwidth to a level which would render file-sharing of media files impractical while leaving basic email and web access functional.” It still seems like there could be a lot of loopholes here, e.g. moving onto a new internet provider, obviously not wanting to pay for something that you cannot use, downloading at free internet spots, the fact that this is coming from three bands who aren’t as affected by illegal downloading as other musicians etc. More as it unfolds, I guess.
