Illegal Downloading – In a battle that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere truly worthwhile, Radiohead, Keane and Blur have come out in strong support of the ‘three strikes’ rule against illegal downloading in the UK. The rule will see users bandwidth sanctioned after three warnings if they continue to download music illegally. A message on the Feature Artists Coalition website said, “Our meeting voted overwhelmingly to support a three-strike sanction on those who persistently download illegal files, sanctions to consist of a warning letter, a stronger warning letter and a final sanction of the restriction of the infringer’s bandwidth to a level which would render file-sharing of media files impractical while leaving basic email and web access functional.” It still seems like there could be a lot of loopholes here, e.g. moving onto a new internet provider, obviously not wanting to pay for something that you cannot use, downloading at free internet spots, the fact that this is coming from three bands who aren’t as affected by illegal downloading as other musicians etc. More as it unfolds, I guess. The Beatles

 – It’s been a big couple of days for releases. Not only did our new favourite album, ‘Only Built For Cuban Linx II’  just come out in the US (a NZ release is apparently not on the books), but we had ‘The Blueprint 3’ (which Rolling Stone are predicting will hit number one) and The Beatles remasters and Rock Band combo. The news has since been removed from the news network but the internet is flooding with rumours that the iTunes announcement will be made officially tomorrow. Maybe not just yet though. MSNBC reports that EMI are denying the deal. “Conversations between Apple and EMI are ongoing and we look forward to the day when we can make the music available digitally. But it’s not tomorrow,” said global catalog president, Ernesto Schmitt.

Lil' Wayne

Lil’ Wayne’s rock album, ‘Rebirth’ has been postponed again and this time there’s no release date at all.

The album, which was originally set to be released in March has been pushed back numerous times.

For the most part ‘Prom Queen’ and ‘Hot Revolver’ disappointed, but ‘Spit’ absolutely killed so it’s up in the air as to why this album is being pushed back yet again. Let’s not forget that ‘Tha Carter III’ was pushed back for the better part of a year before becoming the biggest selling album of the year.

It’ still going to be a big second half of the year for new hip-hop releases. Jay-Z is set to release The Blueprint 3 on September 11 and 50 Cent is already talking of releasing ‘Before I Self Destruct’ on the same date.
